It seems easier to pretend that you are not worried about your body’s symptoms; be it that blood that you are coughing up, that nagging chest pain, the leg sore that won’t heal, or even male impotence. While the heath fears are kept silent, they are not forgotten.
The fears will slowly gnaw at self confidence; Is it a hidden silent killer or a harmless symptom, but without diagnosis both are just as deadly. In your mind the coughing up blood is just a cold or is it cancer? That chest pain is it just asthma or the beginnings of heart disease. The sore that won’t heal is it just dirt getting into it or something else. And is that impotence just feeling tired or is it diabetes or stress and aging?
It is the silence of men's illness that makes it so deadly. If it is serious you are delaying urgent treatment and if it isn’t you are unnecessarily stressing when a simple diagnosis is all that is necessary. The older generation of men were always taught to believe it was weakness to ask for help, that is why it was always believed it was better to “suck it in” and keep a “stiff upper lip”. This is a health disaster. Today we face new stresses that didn’t exist 40 years ago. For some men, they are living in a foreign world with new norms and ideals, they might as well be on another planet because times have changed. It is hard for them to reach out to others, therefore you and I must play our part and reach out to others who don’t seem to be travelling well. Don’t ignore those signs.
